The volunteers, hailing from Canada, Spain, Germany, and Sweden, were en route from Sloviansk to Bakhmut on a humanitarian mission to the region's civilians, according to Ukrainian NGO Road to Relief. The deadly attack took place near the city of Chasiv Yar, resulting in the car being hit, subsequently overturning and catching fire, Polish news agency PAP reported.

Canadian Anthony "Tonko" Ignat was among the fatalities. Emma Igual, the director of the Road to Relief organization and a native of Spain, was initially reported missing. However, later in the day, Spanish officials confirmed that a 32-year-old female Spanish citizen had indeed died in the shelling.

Meanwhile, the German and Swedish volunteers suffered serious shrapnel injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
