Based on the statement reported by Interfax-Ukraine, the Russian operatives were actively engaged in collecting data pertaining to the locations of military fortifications, the mobility of Ukrainian Defense Forces equipment, and even the utilization of railroad lines. Notably, the network also focused on acquiring potentially compromising information about Ukrainian soldiers.
SBU officials elaborated that the agents displayed a particular interest with military commission employees. The information they gathered was purportedly intended to serve a dual purpose: facilitating recruitment efforts and supporting the planning of information warfare campaigns against Ukraine.
SBU’s investigation revealed that the network was also monitoring the effectiveness of Russian artillery strikes and subsequently transmitting the critical data to their superiors in the Kremlin.
In total, four individuals connected to the espionage network have been successfully apprehended by the Ukrainian authorities, including the group’s leader, a Kharkiv local who had fled to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
Among the items seized from the detainees by the SBU were mobile phones, computers, as well as three live battle grenades.
