Polish, Ukrainian top lawmakers discuss cooperation

The Polish and Ukrainian parliamentary Speakers have discussed further cooperation and support for Ukraine's fight against the Russian invasion and the country's preparations to join the European Union.

Poland's lower-house Speaker Szymon Hołownia and Ukraine's parliamentary leader Ruslan Stefanchuk spoke via video link on Thursday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The two top lawmakers "stressed the importance of cooperation between both chambers amid Russia's aggression" against Ukraine, according to an announcement.

Hołownia and Stefanchuk also discussed "ways to build platforms for talks" and Poland's support for Ukraine's bid to join the EU, according to officials.

Stefanchuk, who heads Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada parliament, thanked the Polish nation for "unconditional military, financial and human support."

He also congratulated Hołownia on being elected the Speaker of the Polish lower house, following the October 15 parliamentary election, and invited him to make an official visit to Ukraine, the IAR news agency reported.

Poland's top lawmaker said that Warsaw and Kyiv "must continue to support each other" amid Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Hołownia stated that Poland supported Ukraine's EU aspirations, adding that "Ukraine's presence in Europe is in Poland's national interest," the IAR news agency reported.

'Our strength is in our unity'

Stefanchuk later took to the X social media platform to express his gratitude for Poland's "military, humanitarian and political support for Ukraine."

He said: "Our strength is in our unity."

Thursday is day 631 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
