Poland scrambles aircraft as Russia rains missiles on Ukraine

Poland scrambled aircraft and put its air defence systems on alert as Russia launched a new massive missile and drone attack on neighbouring Ukraine overnight into Wednesday, military officials said.

The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said in a statement that "all necessary procedures have been initiated to ensure the safety of Polish airspace."

It added that it was "monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."

The statement also said that Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Wednesday, with the Operational Command cautioning the public of "increased noise levels, particularly in the southeast of the country," near the Ukrainian border.

The alert was in effect until around 7 a.m., when the Operational Command noted "a decreased threat of missile strikes by Russian aircraft on Ukrainian territory," Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Russia launched a fresh wave of missile strikes on Ukraine in the early hours of Wednesday, targeting the country's energy infrastructureaccording to officials.

Russian missiles and drones struck nearly a dozen Ukrainian critical infrastructure facilities, causing serious damage at three Soviet-era thermal power plants, the Reuters news agency reported, citing Kyiv officials.

The Ukrainian air force said it shot down 39 of 55 missiles and 20 of 21 drones used in the attack, Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform reported.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said two people were injured in the Kyiv region and one was hurt in the Kirovohrad region in central Ukraine, according to Reuters.

Energy Minister German Galushchenko said that power generation and transmission facilities in the Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia regions were targeted.

Maksym Kozytskyi, governor of the Lviv region in western Ukraine, said that Russia attacked a natural gas storage facility in his region near the Polish border, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 805 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
