The Polish foreign ministry said on social media that the meeting between Poland's Radosław Sikorski and Ukraine's Dmytro Kuleba focused on "security issues, Ukraine's accession to the EU and selected bilateral issues."

Kuleba said in a post on the X social media platform that he and Sikorski "welcomed the beginning of Ukraine's EU accession negotiations."

He added: "Poland has consistently supported Ukraine's EU membership over the years. The practical start of talks is a success for Ukraine, Poland, and all of Europe."

The meeting came after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Thursday that he would hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw before a NATO summit in Washington.

"We agreed with President Zelensky to talk in Warsaw before the NATO summit," Tusk said on X.

Tusk told reporters on Friday that Poland and Ukraine were making arrangements to sign a bilateral security agreement when Zelensky visits the Polish capital ahead of next month's NATO summit.

NATO's three-day summit in Washington starts on July 9.
