The two-way talks, officially referred to as intergovernmental consultations, were being led by Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Major topics included security, defence spending and Poland's upcoming turn at the rotating presidency of the European Union, in addition to joint initiatives as part of the Weimar Triangle group, which also includes France, according to officials.

Welcoming his German counterpart to Warsaw, Tusk said in a post on the X social media platform that "Europe today needs strong leadership and a common position on security issues."

Germany's Scholz said in a speech at the end of last month: "Russia does not want peace, but Ukraine wants it: just, without submission and fear of new aggression."

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Tuesday is day 860 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
