"I will be in Ukraine at the beginning of the year, and President Zelensky will visit during this significant moment as we assume the presidency of the European Union," Tusk announced.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Estonian counterpart Kristen Michal, Tusk said that their meeting in Warsaw focused on the security of their countries and Europe as a whole amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He added that Michal, who had visited Ukraine on Tuesday, shared "the latest information from Kyiv."

Tusk told reporters that his upcoming visit to Ukraine and Zelensky's subsequent trip to Poland were arranged during a phone call with the Ukrainian leader on Tuesday.

Poland is set to take over the six-month EU presidency on January 1.

Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 1,022 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
