"Ukraine is in a very difficult situation, so Polish electricity and gas transmission system operators are prepared to provide emergency assistance to Ukraine, if needed," said the source, who declined to be named.

Slovakia has threatened to halt power transfers to Ukraine in retaliation for Kyiv ending an agreement for the transit of Russian gas.

Political scientist Tomasz Kubin told public broadcaster Polish Radio that the issue highlights the critical importance of diversifying energy supplies, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.

"In this context, the Polish authorities responded appropriately ... by announcing plans to increase electricity production to export to Ukraine," Kubin said.

"It is fortunate that Poland has interconnectors—links between the Polish and Ukrainian energy systems—that make such measures possible," he added.
