Hungary, which had blocked the decision since December, lifted its veto after receiving assurances regarding energy security and agreed to extend EU economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, until the end of July.
The European Commission assured that it would continue discussions with Ukraine to maintain the transit of oil and gas to the EU.
The sanctions include an embargo on the import of oil, coal, and gold, restrictions on trade and transport, and a ban on the export of technology and dual-use goods for both civilian and military purposes.
The EU has also closed its airspace to Russian aircraft, disconnected Russian banks from the SWIFT financial system, and banned the broadcasting of Russian propaganda media.
Efforts are currently underway on a 16th sanctions package, which is expected to be adopted by the end of February, around the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
As reported through social media by the Polish MFA, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski is also attending the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting in Brussels.
