Three years of war in Ukraine: EU leaders in Kyiv reaffirm their support

On Monday, February 24, world leaders arrived to Kyiv to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion on Ukraine.

European Commision President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa issued a joint statement during a conference in the Ukrainian capital.

Russia's brutal war delibaretely targets civilian and critical infrastructure. The Ukrinian people have shown bravely in defending their country and the core principles of international law. W pay tribute to all those who have sacrificed their lives and have lost lved ones for Ukraine's indeprendence and freedom, the EU leaders delared.

They emphazised that the European Union has provided Ukraine with a total of 135 billion EUR in aid, including nearly 50 billion EUR in military assistance.

The European Union has provided Ukraine with economic, humanitarian, financial and military assistance totaling 135 billion EUR, with 48.7 billion EUR allocated for military support. 

The EU will continue to provide Ukraine with regular and predictable financial aid, including funding for post war reconstruction.

The leaders also underscored the importance of global unity in supporting Ukraine:

In a challenging international and geopolitical environment, we stress the importance of maintaining transatlantic and global solidarity with Ukraine. We heighlight the need to ensure the international community's continued focus on supporting Ukraine in achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on the Ukrainian peace formula.

We stand firm with Ukraine, reaffirming that peace, security, and justice will prevail.

Other high-profile attendees in Kyiv inlude Canadian Prime Minister Justice Trudeau and the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia, Gitanas Nauseda and Edgars Rinkevics.

Also present are Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericsen, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Estonian Prime Minister Kristern Michal.
