Russia would consider the deployment of European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine as direct NATO involvement in the war, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday, warning that Moscow would not accept any compromises on the issue.

Lavrov’s remarks come in response to proposals from European leaders suggesting the possible deployment of peacekeepers following a ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

Macron’s nuclear deterrence proposal raises Russian concerns

Lavrov also criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments on expanding France’s nuclear deterrence umbrella to protect European NATO members.

"If France considers us a threat, convenes European military leaders, and prepares for nuclear action against Russia, that is, of course, a direct danger," Lavrov said.

His comments follow Macron’s televised address on Wednesday, in which the French president described Russia as a growing threat to Europe. Macron accused Moscow of globalizing the Ukraine conflict by involving North Korean troops and Iranian weapons, while continuing cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns against European nations.
