The military said the move was preventive and aimed at securing Polish airspace, particularly in areas bordering Ukrainian regions under attack.

“On-duty fighter pairs and an early warning aircraft were scrambled, and ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness,” the command wrote on X.

Operations at Lublin and Rzeszow airports were temporarily suspended to ensure freedom of action for military aviation, according to the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency.

Flights later resumed after the fighter jets returned to base and air defence systems went back to standard operational activity. The military said no violation of Polish airspace had been detected.

The Operational Command thanked NATO’s Allied Air Command as well as the air forces of Germany and the Netherlands for their participation in the preventive measures.

Ukrainian authorities reported a mass Russian attack on Kyiv overnight involving missiles and drones, with air raid alerts declared in several regions.

Local officials said a residential building in the capital had been hit, while residents reported hearing multiple explosions. It was not immediately clear whether the blasts were caused by incoming strikes or Ukrainian air defences.
