Tusk made the remarks after meeting Zelensky on the sidelines of a European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenia.

The prime minister said Ukraine was keen for Poland to help bring incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar on board, and to help rebuild trust between Kyiv and Budapest.

Relations between Ukraine and Hungary have long been tense, with Budapest maintaining close ties with Moscow.

The outgoing government of Viktor Orbán blocked a number of measures aimed at supporting Kyiv, including a large EU loan for Ukraine and around EUR 2 billion in reimbursements to Poland for military equipment supplied to Ukraine after Russia's invasion.

Tusk said he planned to host Magyar in Poland soon, with Ukrainian-Hungarian relations among the topics on the agenda.

He added that normalising those ties would benefit the whole of Europe.

The two leaders also discussed preparations for a Ukraine recovery conference due to be held in Gdańsk, northern Poland, in June.

The EPC summit in Yerevan, held under the theme "Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe," brought together 48 heads of state and government from across the EU, the UK, Ukraine, the Balkans and the South Caucasus.

Canada attended for the first time.

The event is being followed by the first-ever EU-Armenia summit, running until Tuesday.

Both gatherings come a month before Armenia's parliamentary elections on June 7.
