Andrzej Duda made the declaration after meeting his Slovak counterpart Zuzana Čaputová in Bratislava, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish president said he had welcomed Čaputová’s proposal "to lobby western Europe" on behalf of Ukraine, “especially wherever there are doubts as to whether Ukraine should quickly receive candidate status."

Ukraine should get EU candidate status 'as soon as possible'

“We have no doubts whatsoever that Ukraine should be granted this status as soon as possible and we are going to press for this in many places,” Duda said.

"We’ll be lobbying for Ukraine to receive this support," he added.

'Unequivocal support'

He told reporters that Poland’s eastern neighbour was "defending all of Europe against the ambitions and imperial actions of Russia.”

He added that Ukraine had the “unequivocal support” of the Polish people.

Polish-Slovak gas link soon: Duda

Duda also said that Poland and Slovakia were "working very well together," including as part of NATO, the EU and the regional Three Seas Initiative of countries between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas.

He added that this cooperation was bringing results in many policy areas, including energy security.

“I am pleased that a gas interconnector will soon link our countries, allowing us to send gas to each other, Poland to Slovakia and Slovakia to Poland, if necessary,” the president told reporters in Bratislava.

Wednesday was day 77 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
