Earlier, air raid sirens had blared across much of the country, including around the time of the blasts in the capital city.

The latest attack on Kyiv, the first major strike on the city in several weeks, comes after Ukrainian forces have counterattacked in Sievierodonetsk, eastern Ukraine, being able to recapture a large chunk of the industrial city.

According to Britain's defence ministry and regional governor, Serhiy Gaidai, Ukraine now controlled about half the city, Reuters reported.
