The surface-to-air missile defence system, called NASAMS, is to be bought and shipped to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), Poland’s tysol.pl website said, citing the US broadcaster CNN.
Co-produced by the US contractor Raytheon and Norway’s Kongsberg, the NASAMS can hit targets some 160 kilometres away, tysol.pl reported.
The system guards the airspace over the American capital, Washington, DC, according to tysol.pl.
NASAMS, anti-artillery radars, artillery ammunition
Under this new tranche of US security assistance, Ukraine is also set to receive anti-artillery radars and artillery ammunition, tysol.pl reported.
Monday’s news comes after the White House last week announced an additional USD 450 million in military aid to Ukraine.
Earlier in June, President Joe Biden’s administration said it was supplying Ukraine with an additional USD 1 billion in security assistance, including howitzers, ammunition and coastal defence systems.
Monday is day 124 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
