Questioned for two hours by journalists at the summer press conference Olaf Scholz said that, "Vladimir Putin is a war criminal and the war he is carrying out in Ukraine is a criminal war."
Asked whether the mediation provided by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was effective, Scholz answered briefly, "I don't know."
Gerhard Schroeder is under investigation by the German Public Prosecutor General regarding accusations of complicity in crimes against humanity because of his role in Russian corporations.
President Zelensky has described Schroeder's efforts as "disgusting" (Reuters).
