According to the sources, US representatives warned Kyiv against stretching its forces across multiple fronts and called for limiting both the geographic scale and objectives of the campaign.
Ukraine initially considered a broader counteroffensive, but in recent weeks has narrowed it to the Kherson region in the south of the country, CNN reported.
The US broadcaster also reported that talks between the United States and Ukraine involved war games, which are analytical exercises designed to determine what forces and what types of armaments would be required to achieve particular goals in different scenarios.
Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder told the broadcaster that Washington "has routine military-to-military dialogue at multiple levels" with Kyiv.
"We will not comment on the specifics of those engagements," Ryder said. "Generally speaking, we provide the Ukrainians with information to help them better understand the threats they face and defend their country against Russian aggression. Ultimately, the Ukrainians are making the final decisions for their operations."
According to CNN, the consensus among Western and Ukrainian experts is that there is now increased parity between the Ukrainian and Russian militaries, despite the latter still maintaining “superior numbers in overall manpower and massed artillery.”
This has been helped by advanced weapons systems given to Ukraine by the United States, notably the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, which Ukrainians are using to attack Russian military targets far behind the front lines, CNN reported.
Thursday is day 190 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
