According to a statement by White House national security spokesman John Kirby, the package will provide Kyiv with "new capabilities to boost its air defenses and counter the threats that Ukraine is facing.”
The United States will also send critical defence equipment, including ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which Ukraine has used to defend itself against Russian attacks, Kirby told a news briefing on Friday.
The United States has committed more than USD 19 billion in security aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in late February, according to officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last month urged the United Nations Security Council to act against Russia over air strikes on civilian infrastructure that have led to massive power cuts and deprived residents of heat and water in cities across Ukraine.
Friday was day 289 of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
