The Kyiv City Military Administration announced that "22 air targets were shot down over the capital during the air raid alert," Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform reported.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that the strikes caused some power and heating outages.
A residential building was damaged and a 19-year-old man was injured as a result of the attack, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
Meanwhile, the regional military command in Ukraine's east said air defence systems destroyed nine Iranian-made drones over the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions by early on Monday, the Reuters news agency reported.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address late on Sunday that he was grateful to his country's energy and utility workers for ensuring stable power supplies despite Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
"Wherever transmission lines and other energy facilities are damaged by shelling, the restoration continues around the clock," Zelensky said.
'Ukraine will prevail in 2023': US envoy
The US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, said on Twitter on Sunday: "Russia coldly and cowardly attacked Ukraine in the early hours of the new year. But Putin still does not seem to understand that Ukrainians are made of iron."
Brink added that "America is absolutely confident Ukraine will prevail in 2023."
Monday is day 313 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
