EU to provide Ukraine with 2,400 more power generators

The European Union will provide Ukraine with an additional 2,400 generators to help it deal with power shortages caused by Russian attacks, the bloc's chief executive said on Thursday.

"We support the Ukrainian power grid and make sure that electricity is supplied despite all the attacks," Ursula von der Leyen said during a visit to Kyiv.

"Today I can say that we provide 2,400 additional generators apart from the previous 3,000 that have arrived since the beginning of the war," she added at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as quoted by Ukraine's Ukrinform news agency.

Von der Leyen also said that Brussels was inviting Ukraine to join the EU Energy Platform to purchase gas together, Ukrinform reported.

Since early October, Russia has targeted Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, including power plants, transmission and distribution facilities and water pumping stations, leaving residents without power, heat or water, the Reuters news agency has reported.
