An indictment against the suspect was submitted to court on February 17, Polish state news agency PAP reported, citing a spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in the northern city of Gdańsk.

Charged with spying on Polish army for Russia

The man was detained in April last year on evidence that he had collected information concerning the military readiness of the Polish armed forces that was then passed on to the Russian intelligence service, according to officials.

The spokeswoman for the Gdańsk District Prosecutor’s Office, Grażyna Wawryniuk, said: "The suspect's espionage activity focused on military units in northeastern Poland, as part of which he carried out tasks of reconnaissance of important elements of the Polish armed forces."

Suspect faces up to 10 years in prison

The man has been charged with spying for Russia between 2015 and April 2022. Moreover, "a number of corruption offences committed by the suspect relating to customs clearance of goods, as part of his business activities, were also revealed," according to prosecutors, the PAP news agency reported.

The man faces up to 10 years in prison, officials said.

"The case is one of several proceedings concerning activities for the intelligence services of Russia and Belarus against the Polish armed forces that prosecutors from the military affairs division are currently conducting," Wawryniuk added.

The announcement came as Russia’s war on neighbouring Ukraine continued for the 365th day.
