Economic decision makers to debate energy, Ukraine in Poland’s Katowice

More than 10,000 politicians, businesspeople and economic policy makers from across Europe are set to kick off three days of debate in the southern Polish city of Katowice on Monday, focusing on topics such as energy security and the postwar reconstruction of Ukraine.

Billed as the largest business event in Central Europe, the annual European Economic Congress in Katowice explores key economic challenges in Poland, Europe and the wider world.

This year the key focus is Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the economy, including energy supplies and "the future of Europe in the face of geopolitical changes," according to organizers.

Expected participants include European Union officials and a contingent of Polish government officials led by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

The debates will explore various issues in business and technology, including green transition, digitization, and the development of artificial intelligence, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The conference, now in its 15th year, runs until Wednesday.

Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea 14 months ago, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Monday is day 425 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
