Polish, Ukrainian presidents hold phone call on Russian aggression, NATO summit

Polish President Andrzej Duda has spoken on the phone to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss Kyiv’s war effort against the Russian invasion and the July summit of the NATO alliance in Vilnius, Lithuania, officials have said.

The two presidents held the phone call on Sunday evening, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Duda and Zelensky discussed “the conclusions of the Bucharest Nine [club of NATO allies]  summit in Bratislava, and the current state of preparations for NATO’s July summit in Vilnius,” the Polish head of state’s office said in a tweet.

Ukraine’s president also briefed his Polish counterpart on “the situation on the frontline amid Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine,” officials said.

Meanwhile, Zelensky said in a tweet: “Finished a late and, as always, productive conversation with Polish President Andrzej Duda. We discussed our expectations from the NATO Summit in Vilnius. We understand the importance of strong steps by the Alliance to guarantee security for Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian president added: “ I am grateful for Poland's significant defense support. We also discussed further priority needs on the frontline. I thank Andrzej for his strong and unwavering position.”  

Duda, Macron, Scholz to discuss support for Ukraine in Paris

Later on Monday, the Polish president was due to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Paris to discuss European security amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, the wpolityce.pl website reported.

The talks between the three leaders were expected to focus on military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including emergency aid after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in the country's southern Kherson region; Ukraine's anticipated counteroffensive against Russia; and efforts to bolster the security of the eastern flank of NATO, according to officials.

Duda, Macron and Scholz were also due to discuss NATO's upcoming summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, according to the Polish President's Office.

Monday is day 474 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
