The Ukrainian strike on Russian troops in the industrial city in the eastern Donetsk region came on Tuesday, according to Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
"As a result of precision firing by Defence Forces units, another formation of Russian terrorists in the temporarily occupied Makiivka ceased to exist," the strategic communication office of the Ukrainian Army said late on Tuesday.
It posted a video on the Telegram social messaging app, showing a huge explosion lighting up the night sky and the silhouette of at least one building, the Reuters news agency reported.
Ukraine’s Armed Forces did not give further details, Britain’s The Guardian newspaper said.
Ukrainian forces advance against Russia in south, east: officials
Ukrainian troops have made further territorial gains around the city of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region, and in the south, as part of their counteroffensive against Russia, Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on Tuesday night.
Malyar said in a media interview: “Today we have an advance along the southern flank around Bakhmut, along the northern flank, frankly speaking, there are battles, there is no advance yet. In the south, we have promotion, every day, by the way.”
She added: “Our military is facing very serious enemy resistance. The enemy is throwing all his strength now to stop us both in the south and in the east."
Malyar also said that, in the southern direction, Ukraine’s counterattacking forces destroyed about 120 units of enemy equipment in just a week, Ukraine’s Interfax news agency reported.
At least 43 injured in Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region
Russia on Tuesday struck the town of Pervomaiskyi, in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, with missiles, wounding at least 43 people, including 12 children, according to the latest figures published by local officials on Wednesday morning.
The youngest of the casualties was 10 months old, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The strike targeted a military funeral in Pervomaiskyi, hitting a parking lot outside a residential building, according to The Guardian.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Wednesday is day 497 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
