The Three Seas Summit in the Romanian capital was expected to focus on efforts to strengthen regional ties and security amid Russia's war in Ukraine, according to Polish presidential aides.

Leaders from across Central and Eastern Europe as well as further afield were due to attend.

Among those invited to take part was US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to address the gathering via video link.

The Polish-led Three Seas Initiative aims to boost infrastructure, energy and business ties among 12 countries between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas.

The initiative brings together Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The initiative’s key partners include the European Union and the United States.

While in Bucharest, the Polish president was scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with officials including Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the IAR news agency reported.
