According to a statement by the US Department of Defense, the new security assistance package includes "additional air defense capabilities, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and other equipment to help Ukraine counter Russia's ongoing war of aggression."
Specifically, Washington will provide Kyiv with additional munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS); additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS); 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds; Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles; Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, the statement said on Friday.
The package also contains more than 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenades; demolitions munitions for obstacle clearing; M18A1 Claymore anti-personnel munitions; 12 trucks to transport heavy equipment; cold weather gear; and spare parts, maintenance, and other field equipment, according to the Pentagon.
The new security assistance package, which aims to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs, will also provide Ukraine with additional laser-guided munitions to counter unmanned aerial systems, the US Defense Department said.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, the United States has committed more than USD 44.2 billion in assistance to help Ukraine defend itself, according to the Pentagon.
"The United States remains committed to working with some 50 Allies and partners who are providing Ukraine with the capabilities it needs to defend itself now and deter Russian aggression well into the future," the US Defense Department also said.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Friday is day 618 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
