Ukraine's General Staff posted an update on frontline developments via Facebook on Monday morning.
Ukrainian troops are pushing on with their assault operations south of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, inflicting losses on Russia in manpower and material and "consolidating their new positions," the military authorities in Kyiv said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine also continues its counteroffensive in the direction of the port of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia, eroding Russian army's manpower and equipment and "exhausting the enemy" all along the frontline, Ukraine's General Staff said.
Ukrainian forces have also established bridgeheads on the east (left) bank of Kherson Oblast in the south, and are conducting ground operations aimed at pushing Russian forces out of artillery range of the west (right) bank of the Dnipro River, the Institute for the Study of War reported.
The stated aim is to to prevent Russian shelling of Ukrainian civilians, especially near Kherson City, the US think tank added.
Overall, Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed 46 times on the battlefield in the course of Sunday, the General Staff in Kyiv said.
"Freezing weather conditions during the winter will likely prompt the resumption of more active combat operations," according to the ISW.
Russian strikes
Russia on Sunday carried out one rocket attack, 17 air strikes and 94 shelling barrages from multiple-launch rocket systems, targeting the positions of Ukrainian troops, as well as civilian settlements, officials in Kyiv said.
There were casualties and injuries among civilians; for instance, a Russian mortar attack killed one person in the town of Seredyna-Buda in the northeastern Sumy region on Sunday evening, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.
Ukrainian attacks
Meanwhile, Ukraine responded with two air strikes on concentrations of Russian troops, as well as missile strikes on two clusters of Russian soldiers, weapons and military hardware, and on three Russian ammunition depots, according to the General Staff in Kyiv.
As part of its latest counteroffensive against Russia, Ukraine is pushing through the Zaporizhzhia region in the southeast, in a bid to reach the port of Melitopol on the Sea of Azov, as well as aiming to retake the city of Bakhmut in the east, among other objectives, according to news outlets.
Monday is day 635 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
