Kosiniak-Kamysz's statement comes amid concerns over the adequacy of Europe's response and readiness to face a potential military threat from Russia.
Speaking in a media interview on Wednesday, Kosiniak-Kamysz said that Europe needs to awaken its industry and shift to a higher level of readiness, focusing on the production of ammunition, components and other material crucial for defense.
He proposed reallocating funds from other programs towards a common security policy and defense industry investments within Europe to keep pace with Russia's wartime economy.
The defense minister also touched on the discussion within Europe about the establishment of a defense commissioner's role at the EU level, and endorsed Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski as a potential candidate for the post, should it be created.
Kosiniak-Kamysz praised Sikorski's extensive experience and global recognition, which he said could be a valuable asset in such a role.
Polish FM urges Europe to ramp up defense production
Sikorski said during a television interview on Tuesday that although the European portion of NATO had a much greater GDP than Russia, its production capabilities were yet to be fully mobilized.
Sikorski pointed out that Russia has transitioned to a wartime economy, with arms factories running multiple shifts, while Europe, "with the noble exception of Norway," remains in a peacetime mode.
He stressed the necessity for at least a partial mobilization of the economy, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Polish defense minister dismisses claims by Belarusian strongman
Speaking to the wp.pl news outlet on Wednesday, Kosiniak-Kamysz dismissed claims by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko that "a large-scale provocation" against Polish civilians was allegedly being prepared by Polish and American intelligence services, intended to be blamed on Minsk and Moscow.
Kosiniak-Kamysz suggested that such accusations from Belarus often indicated their own planning of hostile actions, and expressed concern over increased activity in cyberspace.
These statements and developments highlight a growing need for heightened readiness and cooperation in defense across the EU, against the backdrop of Russia's constant threats and probing of European and NATO unity, officials told reporters.
The call for a shift in economic priorities towards defense underscores the gravity of the security situation in the region and the need for a cohesive and robust response from NATO and EU members, the PAP news agency reported.
