The directive, as reported by Russian independent portal Meduza, expands the draft age range to include men between 18 and 30 years old, a notable shift from the previous cap at 27.
This adjustment comes at a time when all Russian men of age are already obligated to fulfill a year of military service, with alternatives available for those engaged in academic pursuits.
However, the laws governing conscription explicitly prevent these draftees from being deployed to combat zones outside of Russia. This policy was evident in the 2022 mobilization effort, which saw at least 300,000 men called up for military service to support operations in Ukraine.
Last year, 147,000 Russian conscripts were drafted in the spring.
