"EU Ambassadors just agreed on a powerful and substantial 14th package of sanctions in reaction to the Russian aggression against Ukraine," the bloc's Belgian presidency said in a post on the X social media platform.

It added that the new package "provides new targeted measures and maximises the impact of existing sanctions by closing loopholes."

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement on the new punitive measures.

"This hard-hitting package will further deny Russia access to key technologies," she said in an X post.

She added: "It will strip Russia of further energy revenues. And tackle Putin’s shadow fleet and shadow banking network abroad."

The package bans re-exports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in EU waters and sanctions three Russian LNG projects, the Reuters news agency reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Thursday is day 848 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
