Over 975,000 Ukrainians with temporary protection in Poland: Eurostat

Poland has granted temporary protection to more than 975,000 Ukrainians fleeing their country in the wake of Russia’s invasion, the European Union’s statistics agency has reported.

By the end of August, Germany had provided temporary protection to a total of 1,122,330 Ukrainians, more than any other EU country, according to the Eurostat agency.

Among EU member states for which data are available, Poland came in second with 975,190.

In all, nearly 4.2 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine as a consequence of Moscow's war of aggression against Kyiv had temporary protection status in the EU as of August 31, 2024, according to the EU statistics office.

Compared with the end of July, the number of beneficiaries in Poland decreased by 1,015, or 0.1 percent, it said.

Temporary protection is a procedure used in the event of a mass influx of displaced persons from third countries who are unable to return to their country of origin, Eurostat said.
