Presenting the five-point plan to parliament, Zelensky called for urgent action and unity among Ukraine's allies, saying that the initiative was designed to bolster the country's position sufficiently to end the conflict, the Reuters news agency reported.

"We must work with our partners to change the circumstances and bring the war to an end," he said.

"We must ensure that the circumstances force Russia to pursue peace," he added.

The "victory plan" outlined by Kyiv includes an unconditional invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and a strategic non-nuclear deterrence package for the country, Zelensky said, according to Reuters.

The plan also proposes the eventual replacement of certain US forces in Europe with Ukrainian troops, as well as an agreement among Kyiv's allies on joint defence and use of critical Ukrainian resources, Reuters reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 966 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
