"Putin is in tough shape right now, and I think it’s really important that he not have any breathing room to continue to do the god-awful things he continued to do," Biden told reporters during a White House press conference.

Biden expressed optimism about Ukraine’s chances of success, provided that Western allies maintain a united front

"As long as we keep Western Europe united on Ukraine, there is a real chance Ukrainians can prevail," he said.

He also highlighted bipartisan support in Congress for ongoing assistance to Ukraine.

"I know there are significant Democrats and Republicans in Congress who think we should keep supporting Ukraine," Biden said, emphasizing his administration’s aim to provide Kyiv with "every advantage" in its struggle against Russian aggression.

The comments come just days before Donald Trump is set to take office, raising questions about whether US policy on Ukraine will shift under the incoming administration.

On Thursday, the Biden administration announced a $500 million military aid package under Presidential Drawdown Authority, its final tranche for Ukraine before Trump's presidency begins.
