Costa, in a letter to EU heads of state, said the summit would build on a February 3 informal meeting aimed at making Europe "more sovereign and better prepared to meet current and future security challenges."

He noted that "a new momentum" toward a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine should be utilized, and that EU member states stand ready to take greater responsibility for continental security.

Costa also mentioned that the bloc should be prepared to provide security guarantees essential to securing lasting peace in Ukraine, and expressed hope that Zelensky’s presence in Brussels would help assess the latest developments.

During a video conference with EU leaders this week, French President Emmanuel Macron briefed them on his visit to the United States and discussions with President Donald Trump.

Costa later wrote on social media that the meeting helped prepare for the March 6 summit, where decisions about supporting Ukraine and strengthening European defense would be made.
