Zmitser Bandarenka, Andrei Sannikau’s aide and coordinator of “European Belarus” campaign underwent spinal surgery last July. He cannot walk without a crutch and has to take a rest many times during a day. Polish neurosurgeons assessed he cannot be subject to physical work in prison.
Bandarenka stays in penal colony in Mogilev, as he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment after the 19th December presidential elections in Belarus.
Now the administration of the colony decided that Bandarenka cannot use the crutch, cannot lay down during the daytime, cannot wear orthopedic shoes. He also has to walk in line with other prisoners during the break.
Regarding Zmitser Bandarenka grave condition, this may result in deteriorating his health condition. “It’s hard for him to sit down; it causes pains in the lower back. How he will be limping during walks with others is hard to imagine, too. And how will he be standing outside when it is freezing cold? Cold is devastating for the spinal cord and joints”, Wolha Bandarenka prisoner.s’ wife told Belarussian website, charter97.org.
