Hokeiści Chicago Blackhawks po raz czwarty pokonali w finale ligi NHL Philadelphia Flyers i po 49 latach przerwy sięgnęli po mistrzostwo. W środę "Czarne Jastrzębie" wygrały na wyjeździe po dogrywce 4:3, a całą rywalizację 4-2.
Od początku szóstego spotkania przeważali zawodnicy z Chicago. W pierwszej tercji oddali aż 17 strzałów, a "Lotnicy" tylko siedem. W najważniejszej statystyce, czyli zdobytych bramkach, był za to remis 1:1. Dla gości trafił Dustin Byfuglien, a dla Flyers Scott Hartnell.
Następną część gry lepiej rozpoczęli gospodarze, którym prowadzenie zapewnił Danny Briere, ale jeszcze przed jej zakończeniem dwie bramki zdobyły "Czarne Jastrzębie", i to one na drugą przerwę zjechały z lodu prowadząc 3:2. Na listę strzelców wpisali się Patrick Sharp i Andrew Ladd.
W trzeciej tercji utrzymywała się niewielka przewaga Blackhawks, jednak to "Lotnikom" udało się wyrównać i doprowadzić do dogrywki. Na niespełna cztery minuty przed końcem regulaminowego czasu gry Anttiego Niemiego ponownie pokonał Hartnell.
W piątej minucie dogrywki gola na wagę mistrzostwa zdobył dla Chicago Patrick Kane. Dla Blackhawks to czwarty tytuł w historii. Wcześniej triumfowali w lidze NHL w 1934, 1938 i 1961 roku.
32-letni zawodnik "Lotników" Daniel Briere triumfował w punktacji kanadyjskiej play off ligi NHL. W 23 meczach strzelił 12 bramek i zanotował 18 asyst.
W rywalizacji do czterech zwycięstw gracze Flyers ulegli Chicago Blackhawks 2:4.
Indywidualnie w Stanley Cup najlepszy był Briere, a za nim uplasowali się dwaj przedstawiciele mistrzowskiej drużyny "Czarnych Jastrzębi": jej kapitan Jonathan Toews 29 pkt (7+22) i Patrick Kane 28 (10+18). Obaj rozegrali jedno spotkanie mniej od hokeisty z Filadelfii.
W czołowej dziesiątce byli też inni hokeiści tych zespołów. Czwarte miejsce zajął Mike Richards (kapitan Flyers) 23 (7+16), piąte Patrick Sharp (Blackhawks) 22 (11+11), a szóste i siódme Claude Giroux 21 (10+11) i Fin Ville Leino (obaj Flyers) 21 (7:14).
