Helen is the Director of BBC Radio, responsible for the BBC's national stations and all musical output - including the BBC's performing groups, BBC Proms and radio production, as well as managing the Directors of BBC Music and BBC Arts.
She is an award-winning radio journalist and ran BBC Radio 4 between 2000 and 2004. During that time she took the station's audience to 10 million listeners for the first time and won the prestigious Sony Station of the Year award two years in a row.
After graduating from London College of Printing in radio journalism, Helen worked at Radio Tees, Radio Aire and BBC Radio Leeds before joining Radio 4 where she was a reporter, presenter, producer and editor before becoming Controller. As Controller of Radio 4, she also launched BBC 7 – the digital archive station which became Radio 4 Extra and is now one of the most popular digital-only stations in the UK.
She went on to run BBC News, where she oversaw all BBC domestic and international News output and launched the BBC's multimedia newsroom - the largest in the democratic world - before returning to radio in 2013 as the division's Director.
Since then, the BBC's portfolio of stations has helped UK radio industry reach record numbers of listeners, developing new digital distribution technologies whilst remaining completely focussed on delivering distinctive, high quality output for all audiences.
