He is married with 4 adult children and carries the german and french nationality.
Willi Steul studied Social Anthropology, Philosophy, Catholic Theology, History and Sociology in Oxford, Paris, Frankfurt and Kabul and got his PhD in Social Anthropology from Heidelberg University after extensive field work in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
He held posts as ARD foreign correspondent for Afghanistan/Pakistan, then Greece, Turkey and Cyprus (Athens), then Disarmement, UN and Switzerland (Geneva), and covered as special correspondent the Gulf wars for ARD. When Deutschlandradio was created as national broadcaster in 1994 Willi Steul became Editor in Chief (Berlin). From 1998 until 2009 he served as Director Baden-Württemberg and Deputy Director General SWR (Stuttgart). Since 2011 he is Director General Deutschlandradio.
