The appointment came after a general assembly of Supreme Court judges on Saturday nominated a pool of five candidates for the Polish head of state to select from.
Judge Włodzimierz Wróbel secured the most support during that assembly, winning 50 votes from his colleagues, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
Meanwhile, Manowska, a former deputy justice minister, came in second, with 25 votes, according to the state news agency.
Ahead of the announcement, Duda said in a media interview that he would exercise his right to “select freely from among the five candidates.”
He told broadcaster TVP Info on Sunday evening that he would appoint the new chief justice while taking into account the “judicial experience” of the candidates and “whether or not they openly voiced their political views, especially recently.”
In her role as Poland’s new chief justice, Manowska, 55, replaces Małgorzata Gersdorf, who left office at the end of April after a six-year term.
