There were no reports of anyone being injured in the risky operation, during which hundreds of local residents were evacuated, state news agency PAP reported.

The bomb “can be considered neutralized,” said Grzegorz Lewandowski, a spokesman for the Polish Navy’s 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla.

The British 5.4-tonne air-dropped bomb, called a Tallboy, was found last year at the bottom of a canal in Świnoujście, near a ferry crossing, during work to deepen a waterway.

It was probably dropped on the Lützow cruiser in 1945 as part of Allied efforts to destroy Nazi Germany’s critical infrastructure and facilities, the PAP agency reported.
