Nowak, who served as transport minister from 2011 to 2013 in Poland’s former coalition government led by the Civic Platform (PO) party, has been charged with accepting PLN 6.5 million (USD 1.7m, EUR 1.4m) in bribes and soliciting a further PLN 4.5 million, Warsaw district prosecutor Mariusz Dubowski was quoted as saying by the state-run tvp.info website.
Nowak is charged on 17 counts, including money laundering and heading a six-person criminal group, Dubowski was cited as saying.
Nowak was detained in July last year by Poland’s Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) in a joint probe with Ukrainian investigators on suspicion of multiple white-collar crimes while he worked in Ukraine.
After he stopped being a Polish government minister, Nowak headed Ukraine’s State Road Agency (Ukravtodor).
