A mural dedicated to Stanisław Lem, one of Poland's most eminent writers, was unveiled this Sunday in Katowice, southern Poland, and Lviv, where the author was born on September 12, 1921.

In this way the Polish city and UNESCO City of Music joined forces with the largest city in western Ukraine, which is also part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the master of science-fiction.

The mural, according to description, is one whole which has been divided into two parts that lie 400 kilometres away from each other but which are joined in the virtual dimension "to overcome the boundaries of time and space".

The mural has been designed for Katowice by Megi and Michał Kopaniszyn, in cooperation with artistic duo Dilikone and Feros in Lviv.

The theme for the project is a quote from Lem's bestselling novel "Solaris": "we do not need other worlds. We need mirrors".

Stanisław Lem was the most frequently translated Polish author. He died in March 2006 in Kraków, where he had made his home. To honour the writer on the centennial of his birth, Poland's parliament proclaimed 2021 as the Year of Lem.
