A total of 450 MPs backed the proposal, five abstained, and no one voted against the plan, public broadcaster Polish  Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Under the bill, Poland’s military is to be increased to 300,000 troops, including 250,000 career soldiers, with defence spending boosted to 3 percent of GDP as of next year, officials said.

The plan also allows the army to modernise its equipment faster, IAR reported.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took to Facebook to thank “the whole political class” for showing cross-party unity in endorsing the bill, according to the state PAP news agency.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak wrote on Twitter that the passing of the plan represented “excellent news for Poland’s security.”

The bill now heads to the Senate (upper house) for consideration.

It comes as the Russian invasion of Ukraine extended to its sixteenth day.
