Gromadziński, who is a two-star general, will assume his duties in late June, sources told IAR.
The Polish commander currently serves in the international Ukraine support team in Wiesbaden, Germany, overseeing training of Ukrainian troops together with senior US officers, the IAR news agency reported.
In 2018, Gromadziński was appointed to create and lead Poland’s 18th Mechanised Division, which has since grown to become one of the country’s best-performing military units, according to officials.
In January 2022, Poland became one of Eurocorps’ Framework Nations, joining France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain.
The 1,000-strong, 11-country Eurocorps is a rapid-response military force capable of commanding up to 60,000 soldiers. It can be used in humanitarian, rescue and peacekeeping missions by international organisations such as the European Union, NATO and the United Nations.
As a high-readiness NATO force, the Strasbourg-based Eurocorps can participate in the alliance's collective defence operations under Article 5 of the NATO charter. It is led on a rotating basis by commanders named by participating countries.
The military group says on its website that the post of Eurocorps Commanding General is filled on a rotating basis every two years.
The Commanding General is responsible to the Eurocorps Common Committee, the political-military decisive body representing the Framework Nations, according to officials.
Thursday is day 358 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
