The new team, part of the Formoza special forces unit, is expected to help protect infrastructure including a strategic gas terminal in the northwestern port of Świnoujście and the Baltic Pipe pipeline from Denmark, the biznesalert.pl website reported.
Poland's Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak on Tuesday attended the launch of the new combat team in the northwestern coastal town of Dziwnów, according to a report by Polish state news agency PAP.
Błaszczak said: “We are aware of the threats posed by Russia’s aggressive policy. We must be prepared for various provocations, and so Poland’s critical infrastructure must be well protected.”
Błaszczak told reporters on Tuesday that the government aimed to expand the country's special forces in terms of both troop numbers and modern weapons in response to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Wednesday is day 546 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
