During a discussion in the Polish parliament on Wednesday, Mroczek and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the need for new laws on border defense. Responding to MPs' questions about amendments to laws supporting the operations of the army, police, and border guards, including rules on the use of weapons, Mroczek highlighted the current threat posed by aggressive mobs of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border.
"Two months ago, we directed additional police forces prepared to deal with aggressive groups equipped with dangerous objects," Mroczek said. He noted that experienced soldiers, Border Guard officers, and police officers from across the country are currently serving at the border and training others.
"This is long overdue," Mroczek stressed. "We will create special Border Guard units dedicated to protecting the border," he announced, adding that a comprehensive package of measures will soon be presented to the public.
Earlier this month, a Polish soldier died after he was stabbed on the border with Belarus by migrants trying to cross into the European Union. The Polish government said a protest note had been delivered to the Belarusian chargé d'affaires, demanding the identification and extradition of the murderer to Poland.
But, Belarus' response to Poland's request was "completely unsatisfactory," Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said at the time.
