During their relief efforts, soldiers from Poland's 72nd Light Infantry Battalion stumbled upon EUR 10,000 hidden inside a garbage bag. The money has since been handed over to the police, who are now working to identify its owner.
The discovery took place on Saturday as soldiers stationed in the Lower Silesian region were cleaning up near a flood embankment between Stronie Śląskie and Lądek-Zdrój. The soldiers were part of ongoing flood relief operations in the area.
“After inspecting the bag, the soldiers immediately informed their battalion commander, Lt. Col. Marcin Łyskanowski,” said Piotr Langenfeld, spokesman for the 7th Pomeranian Territorial Defense Brigade. Following military procedures, local police were called to secure the cash.
Langenfeld confirmed the bag contained exactly 10,000 euros, dispelling rumors of varying figures reported in the media. He also emphasized that the soldiers, who have been stationed in the region for a month, have developed “true, emotional bonds” with the local residents, who have shown immense appreciation for their efforts.
