The incident, which took place early Saturday, was caused by a lorry that collided with a car, triggering a chain reaction involving 18 cars and 3 trucks.

The accident occurred on the stretch of motorway heading toward the coastal city of Gdynia, with police confirming that children were among the victims.

The collision led to the immediate detention of the lorry driver, a 37-year-old man.

According to Karol Kościuk, spokesperson for the district police station in Pruszcz Gdański, initial investigations suggest that the driver rear-ended another vehicle, setting off the deadly pileup.

The truck driver was tested for sobriety and was found to be sober. His blood has been taken for further toxicological analysis”, Kościuk told reporters, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

The affected section of the S7 remains closed to traffic, with authorities warning that the disruption could last until midday as police continue their work at the scene.
