According to Gazeta Wyborcza, 51-year-old Serhii S., a Ukrainian national and would-be saboteur, admitted that Russian intelligence ordered him to set fire to a paint factory in Wrocław, southwestern Poland.

Poland arrests suspected saboteur linked to Russian GRU

Serhii S. was apprehended by Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) and detained on January 31, 2024.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, in an interview with TVN24, confirmed that the Kremlin had planned similar actions across Europe.

Media across the continent have reported other incidents, such as explosive devices hidden in air freight packages in Germany and the UK.

Russia has been recruiting saboteurs, offering large sums of money for arsons targeting public infrastructure in Europe.

British intelligence suspects that the GRU is running a sabotage campaign across Europe, including attacks on strategic infrastructure. U.S. intelligence has similarly warned that Russia might escalate sabotage in response to Western military support for Ukraine.

Polish government to announce response to Russian-sponsored arsons

During an interview on Radio ZET, Bartoszewski announced that Poland will take steps against the Russian government but will not expel the Russian ambassador.

In his opinion Poland's response to the arson attacks, attributed to Russia's GRU, must target the Russian authorities.

More details are expected from Minister Sikorski later this Tuesday.
